What Are Jade Rollers?

Jade rolling is actually a beauty routine that originated in China in the 17th-century but just now making its way to Western beauty world. It was used by the royalty and elite of the Chinese empire, so essentially if you use a jade roller, you should be counted as royalty, right? I certainly think so. A jade roller honestly looks like a mini paint roller… but for your face. They come in all different sizes, depending on what part of your face and body you want to use them on. The name pretty much encapsulates what it is; a genuine solid jade stone made into a roller for your face!

How to Use a Jade Roller

A jade roller is designed to massage different areas of your face. One of the biggest mistakes people use to massaging too aggressively! You definitely shouldn’t be feeling any pain or discomfort (or waking up with bruises!) when using a facial roller, and if you are, that’s a sign you should be doing it a little more gently.

A popular way people use their facial roller is to work their serums and facial oil into their skin. A lot of people have said this method really helps their skin care products absorb so much better. Plus, it makes the process much more relaxing! You can also refrigerate your jade roller before using it in the morning to make the experience extra soothing

If you’re looking for the way dermatologists recommend using your jade roller, look no further. This method is beneficial for improving blood circulation and lymphatic drainage. Just in case you’re wondering, using gua sha tool for lymphatic drainage is a way to remove toxic fluids, in this case from your face. You can perform lymphatic drainage by using a gentle massaging method with something like, you guessed it, a jade roller.

To start, dermatologists recommend a jade facial roller horizontally starting from the center of your face. The first few points should be from your chin, mouth, and nose to your ear. Then, from your eye to your temple. Then on your forehead, you should roll upward from your eyebrow to your hairline and horizontally from the middle of your forehead towards your temple. Make sure to regularly clean your jade roller with soap and warm water to make sure you’re not putting any bacteria onto your face.

Benefits of Using a Jade Rollers

As you’ve already read, a few of the skin health benefits of jade rolling include depuffing, decreasing redness, and lymphatic drainage. But did you also know it can actually help with rosacea as well? Because of the cooling and calming effects, it can decrease the look of rosacea on your face, especially first thing in the morning. Other jade roller benefits of facial massaging are that when done correctly, it can improve headaches, eye strain, and sinus congestion as well. If done before bed, facial massaging can really loosen the face muscles helping you wind down and relax before going to sleep.

My Experience

After doing all my research, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on a jade facial roller and try it out myself. Because I use so many skincare products, I was particularly interested in seeing if it would help my products absorb better. At night, I use lots of serums and oils so I thought this would be the perfect time to try it out. I usually wait to apply my nighttime moisturizer 5-10 minutes after applying serums to make sure everything has absorbed properly, but after using the jade roller for about 30 seconds after each product, I felt like they were completely absorbed. Plus, it was super relaxing before bed! I’m definitely going to continue to do this method on a regular basis.

The second way I used my jade roller was refrigerating it at night and using it to depuff first thing in the morning. Let me tell you, it definitely felt weird putting a beauty tool in the fridge. But the cooling sensation definitely helped to depuff underneath my eyes, and it was great to just take those few minutes to massage my face! I did find that it helped my redness, but those results only lasted for about an hour after I used it.

The third way I used the jade roller was for lymphatic drainage. I did exactly how dermatologists recommend it, using the horizontal method. Although I didn’t see very immediate results, the massage felt great and I could tell that my facial muscles felt much more relaxed afterwards.

Jade Roller before and After

I’ve been jade rolling for a few weeks now, and I can definitely see the benefits. My puffiness is gone in the mornings after using it to depuff first thing, my skincare products seem to be absorbed better, and they feel much more relaxed after lymphatic drainage! It’s also great that jade rollers are relatively inexpensive compared to other facial massaging tools. If you feel a bit bloated or just want smoother skin overall, give jade rolling a try by following these steps every morning!

Should You Try it?

Although the results aren’t very dramatic, you don’t really have anything to lose if you’re going to try jade rolling. If you’re already into skincare and have a passion for taking care of your skin, I think you’ll be pretty motivated to try it out and stick with the routine. If anything, it’s very relaxing and feels good to take those extra few minutes out of your morning and night for the facial massage. Also, if you’re someone who wakes up with puffy under eyes, this is a great tool to remedy that. All in all, I’d recommended at least trying it to see if you experience the benefits!
